SUMMARY

This Tech Note details the procedure to identify and clear APPCRASH events that appear in the Windows Event Viewer for System Platform components. This can impact any component of System Platform and look like the following:

 • Windows Error Reporting: Event Name: APPCRASH P1: GDIWebServer.exe
 • Windows Error Reporting: Event Name: APPCRASH P1: AELicServer.EXE
 • Windows Error Reporting: Event Name: APPCRASH P1: aahIDAS.EXE
 • Windows Error Reporting: Event Name: APPCRASH P1: aahStorage.exe

This issue is caused when AVEVA services that are running rely on other AVEVA services that have been stopped. For example, when performing a software install, such as a Service Pack or Patch upgrade, “Stop Services” is selected to allow the installation to continue. If some AVEVA services stay on “Running” with other AVEVA services on “Stopped”, the running services may generate the APPCRASH errors.

These APPCRASH events repeat in the same pattern along with other Windows related APPCRASH events. It is also worth noting that at times excessively large logs error reports can continue to report into Event Viewer because the log files failed to “report”, usually in instances where the machine is not connected to the internet. However, the projects/applications can still be developed and ran at runtime, data values continue to come in, alarms can be acknowledged, etc. The system continues to run as expected. Additionally, LogViewer in OCMC/SMC does not report any errors associated with the APPCRASH events.

APPLIES TO

 • Application Server
 • InTouch HMI
 • Historian Server
 • Historian Clients
 • License Server/Manager

PROCEDURE

To correct the issue, perform a Disk Cleanup and clear the Windows Error Reporting Queue.

 1. Open Windows Explorer. Right-click on the C: drive and select Properties.
 1. Under the General tab, select Disk Cleanup.
 1. Check Windows error repots and feedback diagnostics, the click OK.
 1. APPCRASH events should stop appearing in the Windows Event Viewer logs.

SUMMARY

AVEVA Licenses require license activation, a process whereby the authenticity of the license is verified against license records via the AVEVA License Activation Server and the license is bound to the license server from which the activation was initiated.

License activation requires communication over the Internet with the AVEVA License Activation Server. That communication can be either direct over the Internet (Online Activation) or indirect through a proxy computer (Offline Activation).

This Tech Note describes the process of activating an AVEVA license using OFFLINE activation.

You can also reference our Video Tech Note on Offline Activation for an overview of this process.

APPLIES TO

 • AVEVA Enterprise License Server

PROCEDURE

 1. When purchasing a license for an AVEVA product, the deliverable that you will receive for your order will be an E-mail with multiple attachments – two PDF documents and a .zip archive. Select a machine to act as a License Server, then save and extract the .zip archive attachment to a location easily accessible from that server. The file extracted will be an XML file.
 1. When installing your AVEVA product, be sure to install the AVEVA Licensing components as well.

NOTE: For simplicity, the demonstration given in this tech note assumes both the License Server and the License Manager are installed on the same machine. If desired, those components can be split across multiple machines.

 1. Once the AVEVA products have been installed, you will need to run the Configurator. In addition to configuring any other installed AVEVA software, you will need to configure the AVEVA Enterprise License Server.

Enter the name of the computer where the License Server is installed, then click “Test Connection”. After a successful test, click “Configure”.

 1. To activate licenses on your AVEVA License Server, you must open and use the AVEVA Enterprise License Manager. The License Manager can be launched from Start > AVEVA > Enterprise License Manager.
 1. On opening the License Manager to the Servers page you should see the local License Server listed. It will have the same name as the local computer. The License Manager is set, by default, to use Online Activation, which can be verified by the cloud icon in the top right corner. If there is a green check mark in the cloud, Online Activation is enabled. If there is a red X in the cloud, the License Manager is set for Offline Activation.
 1. If the server is set for Online Activation, you will need to change it. Click the menu icon in the top left corner and select Activation Settings.
 1. On the Activation Settings page, select Offline Activation.
 1. Click on the server card to open the license activation page. Click on the Add License button to select a license to activate.
 1. Select the menu icon again and select Servers to return to the server page.
 1. The License Activation panel will slide out from the right side of the screen. Click the ellipses button next to the Browse field, then browse to and select the Entitlement XML file that you received in Email (Step 1). As soon as you select the file, the Activation Codes included in the entitlement are loaded into the License Activation panel.
 1. Click on the box next to the license or licenses you wish to activate. A check mark will fill the box, indicating that the license has been selected. If the entitlement includes multiple licenses / activations, enter the quantity that you would like to activate on this server.
 1. Click the Activate button, after a short pause, the license will show in the License Manager with a status of “Pending Activation Request”. Additionally, the Offline Activation select menu will be highlighted yellow.
 1. Click the down arrow on the Offline Activation/Deactivation menu and select Request Activation/Deactivation.
 1. Click Yes to confirm the activation.
 1. You will be prompted to download a file. The file’s name begins with “send” and ends with the .sync extension. This is the send.sync file. Save this file to a flash drive or other portable media.

 1. Locate a computer that has an open connection to the Internet. Insert your portable media. Open a browser (Edge, Chrome or Firefox) and navigate to URL http://licenseactivation.wonderware.com .

 1. Click the Choose File button. Browse to the location of your portable media and select the send.sync file. Enter the Captcha text seen in the image, then click Upload File.

NOTE: Make sure the Captcha code on the License Activation website has 5 characters and not 4 in the image. If it has 4, regenerate the code until it has 5.

 1. After a short pause, you will be prompted to save a new file. The file name begins with “recv” and has the .sync extension. This is the recv.sync file. Save this file to your portable media.
 1. Return to the offline License Server machine. Insert your portable media. On the Offline Activation select menu, select Receive Activation/Deactivation.
 1. Browse to your portable media and select the recv.sync file. After a short pause, the license server will refresh and show the license as activated.

SUMMARY

Certain conditions can cause the AVEVA Enterprise License Server to enter a License Grace Period. The Grace Period allows the server and licenses to operate normally for fifteen days. Once the fifteen day period has expired, the License Server will no longer allow licenses to be acquired. Removing the Grace Period mode will allow the License Server to function normally again.

Conditions that can cause the License Server to enter the Grace Period mode include:

 • If licenses are still activated when a virtual machine that is hosting a License Server is cloned, moved or copied, the License Server will enter a Grace Period. Therefore, it is important to deactivate all licenses on the License Server before the VM is cloned, moved or copied.
 • If licenses are still activated when there is a hardware change on the hosting computer such as MAC address change or network cards added/removed, the License Server will enter race Period.

This tech note will provide instructions for two methods that can be used to remove the Grace Period mode from a License Server.

APPLIES TO

 • AVEVA Enterprise License Server

PROCEDURE

Method 1 – Reset the License Server

This method is most useful when there are a limited number of activated licenses on the License Server and License Server Redundancy has not been configured.

 1. Open the AVEVA Enterprise License Manger and select the License Server that is currently in Grace Period mode.
 2. Select all the license currently active on the server and Deactivate
 3. Once all the licenses have been deactivated, click the Manage icon and expand the Grace Period section of the Manage License Server panel.
 1. Click End Grace Period and remove activated licenses.
 2. A warning message appears to confirm you want to exit the Grace Period.
 1. Click Yes to exit the Grace Period and reset the License Server ID.

NOTE: Any licenses that were still active on the License Server will still be associated with the original License Server ID. To re-activate those licenses, you will first need to contact Technical Support and request the license be released.

License Server before ending Grace Period

License Server after ending Grace Period and resetting License Server ID

 1. Activate the required licenses on the License Server.

Method 2 – Apply Grace Period Exit Code

This method is preferred when there are a large number of licenses that would need to be deactivated and reactivated and/or when License Server Redundancy has been configured, which makes Method 1 (above) impractical. This method will require contacting Technical Support to request an exit code.

 1. Contact Technical Support and request a Grace Period Exit code. The exit code will be valid for three days from the date it is generated. An exit code can be used only once, so if you have multiple License Servers in Grace Period, you will need to request a separate exit code for each server.
 2. Open the AVEVA Enterprise License Manger and select the License Server that is currently in Grace Period mode.
 3. Click the Manage icon and expand the Grace Period section in the Manage License Server
 4. Type or copy the Grace Period Exit code into the field click Apply to end the Grace Period without affecting your activated licenses.

NOTE: If your License Server is using OFFLINE activation, you will need to manually perform a Sync of the license server after applying the exit code to remove the grace period.

 1. Reset Grace Period will appear in the License Summary. This line item has no effect on the functionality of the License Server. The expiration date is the expiration of the Exit Grace Period code. You can remove this item from the License Summary by performing a Sync of the License Server.

Unable to Activate More than One License in a Group https://industrial-software.com/training-support/tech-notes/115-unable-to-activate-more-than-one-license-in-a-group/ Sat, 13 Nov 2021 01:21:52 +0000 https://industrial-software.com/?post_type=wwpw_tech_note&p=22399 Symptoms and Troubleshooting steps are described in this Tech Note regarding issues activating more than 1 license when licenses are delivered with Group Serial Numbers. This impacts version 2017 & 2020 license orders placed after Oct 1, 2021.

The post Unable to Activate More than One License in a Group appeared first on Industrial Software Solutions.

]]>
Recently, AVEVA changed the way activated licenses were ordered by implementing Group Serial Numbers. This affected license entitlement fulfillment methods. During the transition in Oct/Nov 2021, some customers found they were unable to activate all the licenses in their order as delivered.

Common symptoms and work arounds are described in this Tech Note. This impacts version 2017 & 2020 license orders placed after Oct 1, 2021.

Please refer to AVEVA’s Tech Note 10739 for more information about the Group Serial Number change.

SYMPTOMS

The most commonly reported symptom is being limited to a Quantity of 1 activation of any license type/license part number when multiple licenses of that type were ordered.

After the first successful activation, users will see the following message when attempting to “Add” the next license entitlement file. It reads: “Imported entitlement already exists from a previous import and are all activated.”

This typically occurs when a list of license files was delivered, each with a part number followed by a sequence number (0, 1, 2, 3, etc.) listed in the file name, similar to the picture below.

You may also notice that under the Serial Number column in the AVEVA License Manager that any successful activation displays a number prefixed by “GSN”.

And that the Total Quantity column (in the “Add License” menu) shows “1” for the entitlement when loaded.

CORRECTIVE ACTIONS

 1. Reply to your order delivery email, or contact your Sales Operations Specialist at orders@industrial-software.com. Reference this Tech Note and ask to have your entitlement regenerated as a single, consolidated file. You will usually receive a reply within 24 hours.
 2. Deactivate the previous entitlement(s) with a QTY of 1.
 3. You may also need to Remove the entitlement completely (from the “Add License” menu).
 4. Once you receive your updated licenses from Sales Operations requested in Step 1, use the NEW consolidated entitlement to Activate the desired Quantity of licenses per license server. Enter the desired quantities in the Quantity to Activate column, then select Activate.

For distributed license server environments, you can repeat this process on additional license servers by importing the consolidated file again and selecting a new mix of quantities to activate. Note that Quantity to Activate entered must always be less than or equal to the difference of the Total Quantity and Quantity Activated columns. However, the Quantity Activated column is NOT cumulative, it only shows existing activations on the CURRENT license server.

adapters)

6) Copy the “Hardware Identifier”

7) Visit the AVEVA website (https://softwareom.wonderware.com/Licensegen/default.aspx) to activate the license. You need your Wonderware credentials to log in to the site. If you are eligible to consignment licenses, you will be prompted with two options: “End User Runtime Licenses” and “Consignment”. Select “Consignment” and click on the “Submit” button to activate Consignment Licenses.

The “End User Runtime License” option must be selected for perpetual licenses only (not consignment). When selecting “End User Runtime License”, the system will ask for the Serial Number of the purchased license. It is not necessary to enter any Serial Number to activate consignment licenses.

Note: If you are NOT able to log-in to this site, or do NOT get the “Consignment” option, either your registration has not been confirmed by AVEVA, or, you are NOT eligible for consignment licenses. In order to be eligible, you must be registered correctly as a Partner with AVEVA (not End User) and own at least one of the consignment licenses mentioned above in the Abstract with an active (not expired) support agreement.

8) Select the consignment license for the version of AVEVA Edge that you want to license, paste the “Hardware Identifier” from the “Register” module into the web form and click submit.

9) If a valid “Hardware Identifier” has been entered, then a license “Activation Code” is returned. Copy/paste or type the code in the “Activation Code” field in the “Register” module, and then click Authorize.

10) The new license settings are saved on the computer and a confirmation message is displayed (“Activation Code Accepted”).

 • If the new “Activation Code” is not validated, an error message is displayed. If this happens, double-check that you have entered the “Activation Code” correctly. If you still get an error message, contact our technical support department.

The consignment licenses for AVEVA Edge are temporary Softkey licenses, which expire when the current consignment agreement expires (up to one year). When/if the consignment license agreement is renewed by the partner, they can activate the consignment license again.
